Precancers and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers (NMSC)

Signs & Symptoms

Precancerous skin lesions and non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) often present as new growths, rough or irregular patches of skin, or sores that fail to heal or change appearance. Common forms include:

  • Rough, red patches
  • Hard, red lumps
  • Smooth or shiny bumps, sometimes with an indentation

Sun-exposed areas, such as the face, neck, arms, and hands, are more at risk, although skin cancer can also develop on less exposed areas, including the lips (actinic cheilitis).

Precancerous lesions may progress to skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), if left untreated.

Solution & Treatement

CO2 laser resurfacing is a precise solution that minimizes scarring and is effective for treating precancerous lesions and some forms of non-melanoma skin cancers.

Treatment

While simpler treatments, such as liquid nitrogen or specific chemotherapy creams (like Efudex or Aldara), are effective, CO2 laser stands out as one of the best options for treating isolated or few lesions. Additionally, it allows for a simultaneous biopsy to confirm the diagnosis while removing the lesion.
