Rhinophyma

Signs & Symptoms

Rhinophyma is an enlargement of the sebaceous glands of the nose, resulting in thickening and deformation. It is often considered a severe complication of rosacea, particularly in middle-aged or older men. Characteristics include an enlargered, bumpy, and reddish nose, often accompanied by enlarged pores and a rough texture.

Solution & Treatment

CO2 laser treatment has become the preferred method for correcting the deformities caused by this skin condition.

Treatment

The CO2 laser (carbon dioxide) emits high-energy light capable of vaporizing the superficial layers of the skin. Thanks to its precision, it graduallyl removes hypertrophic skin tissue from the nose, layer by layer, while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissues. Unlike traditional surgical methods, CO2 laser treatment offers better control over the depth of tissue removal, thereby reducing the risk of visible scarring.

In addition to tissue removal, the CO2 laser stimulates the contraction of collagen fibers, which can tighten the skin and improve its overall texture.

Dr. Barolet has exceptional expertise in correcting rhinophyma using laser technology. CO2 laser treatment is generally performed under local anesthesia, sometimes combined with light sedation. Dr. Barolet uses the laser to progressively and precisely remove excess skin and gland layers on the nose, reshaping its form and eliminating irregularities. The procedure typically lasts between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on the severity of the rhinophyma.

The results of CO2 laser treatment are long-lasting and offer significant aesthetic improvement. The nose appears smoother and more even, with a reduction in rosacea symptoms associated with rhinophyma.
